Antique 1910 Hettie Anderson Original Landscape Painting on Academy Board – Art Metropole Toronto

Wonderful original antique landscape painting dated 1910, signed Hettie Anderson, depicting a peaceful wooded scene with a stream, rustic mill or cabin, waterwheel, mountain backdrop and winding path.

The painting is executed directly on a substantial Academy Board and retains its original paper label on the reverse reading:

“Academy Board – Extra Quality – Manufactured Expressly for the Art Metropole – Toronto, Ontario, Canada.”

That label is an especially interesting piece of Canadian art history. Art Metropole was an important Toronto supplier of artists’ materials in the early 20th century, and surviving period paintings on its academy boards are documented. An Art Metropole-labelled academy board was even used by Group of Seven artist J.E.H. MacDonald during this same general era.

The lower-left corner is hand signed “Hettie Anderson, 1910.” I was unable to confirm a documented Canadian artist by that exact name, so I would sell this as an original signed period painting without attributing it to a listed artist.

At over two feet wide, it has excellent antique decorative presence and would look very good framed.

Condition

Good antique condition for a piece over 115 years old.

The painting shows age-related surface wear, light marks, some discoloration and general patina. The board remains substantial and the painted scene presents well.

The white border/mounting area shows additional wear and age-related marks. The reverse has old writing, surface marks, remnants of paper and the original Art Metropole Academy Board label.

I would not clean or attempt to restore the painted surface, as the untouched age and original Art Metropole label are part of the appeal.
