A genuinely interesting German-made HASAG No. 651 kerosene hurricane lantern with excellent industrial and historical character.

The front of the fuel tank is embossed “HASAG No. 651” along with the distinctive HASAG trademark. This model is documented by lantern collectors as a German HASAG dead-flame kerosene hurricane lantern, and surviving examples are increasingly sought after by collectors of early lighting, European industrial pieces and vintage farm equipment.

This example retains its clear glass globe, burner assembly, wire globe guard, carrying handle and vented top. The untouched aged surface, oxidation and patina give it the kind of authentic appearance that works particularly well as farmhouse, cabin or industrial décor.

HASAG History

HASAG was short for Hugo Schneider Aktiengesellschaft, a major German metalworking company based in Leipzig. Its roots date to 1863, when Hugo Schneider became involved in a small business producing lamps and metal goods. Schneider took full ownership in 1871, and in 1899 the company was reorganized as Hugo Schneider AG — HASAG. Lamp and burner manufacturing became an important part of the company's early growth, with its products eventually sold internationally.

HASAG's later history is considerably darker. During the 1930s and Second World War, the company became heavily involved in German armaments production and operated factories that made extensive use of forced and concentration-camp labour. That history is an important part of accurately describing surviving HASAG artifacts rather than treating the name simply as an old lantern brand.

HASAG's lantern business also changed considerably during the 1930s. The company acquired lantern-related equipment, brands and patents from other German manufacturers and continued producing several styles of kerosene lanterns. Collector research indicates that HASAG's production of conventional storm lanterns largely ended by 1939 as the company increasingly concentrated on military production.

That makes surviving examples such as this No. 651 an interesting piece of pre-war German lighting and industrial history.
