Antique Royal Doulton D4077 “Piping Down the Valleys Wild” Seriesware Jug

Description

A charming antique Royal Doulton seriesware jug featuring colourful pastoral scenes with seated figures, birds and decorative green scrollwork. Its octagonal body, angular handle and softly aged ivory finish give it wonderful Arts and Crafts character.

The underside carries the Royal Doulton England backstamp, pattern number D4077 and registered design number 597783. Pattern D4077 is known as “Piping Down the Valleys Wild,” inspired by the work of William Blake. The crown-and-lion backstamp and comparable documented pieces date this example to approximately the 1910s or early 1920s.

A beautiful display piece for a china cabinet, bookshelf, vintage kitchen or curated cottage-style interior.

Condition

Good antique display condition with noticeable glaze crazing throughout, consistent with its age. There is light age-related discolouration, staining and small speckled marks inside, along with normal wear and discolouration around the underside and foot.

No obvious chips or cracks were noted in the photographs. Due to the crazing and interior wear, this piece is best used for decorative purposes rather than serving food or beverages. Please review all photographs carefully as they form part of the description.
