A particularly nice piece of Saskatchewan cartographic history.
This is Stovel’s Map of Saskatchewan, originally produced by The Stovel Co. of Winnipeg in 1905. This example is the 1979 Association of Canadian Map Libraries facsimile edition, published in cooperation with the Saskatchewan Archives Board in Regina and Saskatoon.
Importantly, this is not simply a modern reproduction. The printing identifies it as Facsimile No. 38 and states that the edition was limited to only 500 copies. This particular example is individually numbered Copy No. 460.
The Association of Canadian Map Libraries and Archives still identifies Facsimile No. 38 as Stovel’s Map of Saskatchewan (1905) in its official facsimile catalogue. CARTO Canada Map Libraries
A fascinating map showing Saskatchewan at the very beginning of its history as a province, filled with early communities, railway routes, township grids and geographic details. It makes an excellent display piece for a Saskatchewan history collector, map collector, genealogist, railway enthusiast or anyone with prairie roots.
