Vintage Dr. Oetker West Germany Kitchen Scale – Orange & Cream Retro Baking Scale

A fun and very displayable vintage Dr. Oetker kitchen scale, made in West Germany, with a bold orange body, cream weighing platform and dark green front panel.

This is exactly the kind of small kitchen piece that works well with the current interest in 1970s retro décor, colourful vintage kitchens and European kitchenware. The orange-and-cream colour combination gives it much more visual appeal than a standard utility scale.

The front is marked “DR. OETKER KITCHEN SCALE – not legal for trade,” with measurements shown in both ounces and grams. A side adjustment wheel allows the scale to be returned to zero.

The underside is embossed in several languages and clearly states “Made in W-Germany.” Because West Germany existed from 1949 until German reunification in 1990, that marking provides a useful dating window. Based on the styling and materials, I would place this example most likely in the late 1960s to 1970s.

Dr. Oetker has a long connection with home baking equipment as well as baking products. Historical information indicates that the company was already developing branded household weighing scales in Germany during the 1930s as a way of helping home bakers measure recipe ingredients accurately.

Condition

Good vintage condition with typical signs of previous kitchen use.

There are surface marks, scratches, light staining and age-related discoloration, particularly on the cream weighing platform. The orange body retains strong colour and presents very well.

As shown in the photographs, the scale responds when weight is placed on the platform. However, because this is a vintage mechanical scale, exact calibration and weighing accuracy are not guaranteed.

Please review all photographs carefully as they form part of the condition description.
