A striking piece of Canadian distilling, horse-racing and advertising history, this vintage amber glass bottle is from Seagram’s King’s Plate Canadian Rye Whisky, produced by Joseph E. Seagram & Sons Ltd. in Waterloo, Ontario.

The bottle retains its original front and back paper labels, metal screw cap and a Canadian excise strip marked 1949. According to the City of Waterloo Museum, the date on the excise strip identifies the year in which the youngest whisky in the blend was distilled. Seagram’s introduced King’s Plate whisky in 1934 to celebrate the company’s successful racing stable and its many King’s and Queen’s Plate victories.

The elaborate label artwork features horses and jockeys associated with the King’s Plate, while the reverse label lists Seagram Stable’s Queen’s and King’s Plate winners. The Waterloo Museum notes that Seagram’s racing stable accumulated 20 Plate victories between 1897 and 1935.

An excellent display bottle for a collector of Canadian whisky advertising, Seagram memorabilia, horse-racing history or early Canadian glass.
